The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY has established itself as a master school for new music that is unique around the world. Under the artistic directorship of Wolfgang Rihm and Principal
Conductor Matthias Pintscher, the Academy now launches its 15th season in the summer of 2018.
Some 130 young musicians are invited to Lucerne from all over the world to devote themselves over a three-week period to music of the 20th and 21st centuries: both classics of modern music
and brand-new works, which they present in orchestral, ensemble, and chamber concerts. They receive coaching from a team of internationally renowned performers of contemporary music
and from musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra who work as instrumental coaches.
In the summer of 2018, the Academy students will be collaborating not only with Matthias Pintscher but also with Sir Simon Rattle, Duncan Ward and Peter Eötvös, the world premiere of whose new composition commissioned by the Roche Commissions series they will perform.
They will work with such artists as the percussionist and composer-in-residence Fritz Hauser and the pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Tamara Stefanovich. And in addition to key works of Modernism by György Kurtág, Luigi Nono, and Bernd Alois Zimmermann, they will focus intensively on the creative legacy of Karlheinz Stockhausen, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday in 2018, through performances of such important scores as Gruppen and Inori.
At the end of the program, these talented young musicians will then go on tour to several cities to show off their skills beyond Lucerne as well.
